Workshop

Our space where ideas become furniture through careful craftsmanship.

The Workshop Environment

Our workshop is a space designed to support the craft of furniture making. It houses both traditional hand tools and modern precision machinery, each selected for its role in creating quality furniture.

The layout supports the flow of work from raw timber to finished piece. Areas are organized for different stages: material storage, rough milling, joinery, assembly, and finishing. This organization allows work to progress efficiently while maintaining focus on quality.

Natural light fills the space where possible, supplemented by task lighting that ensures visibility for detailed work. The environment is maintained to protect both tools and materials, with attention to temperature and humidity control.

Hand Tools

Traditional hand tools remain essential in our work. Planes, chisels, saws, and marking tools are carefully maintained and sharpened. These tools allow for the precision and control needed for fine joinery and surface work.

Hand tools require skill and practice to use effectively. The marks they leave—whether from a hand plane or a chisel—contribute to the character of the finished piece, evidence of the craft involved in its creation.

We invest in quality tools and maintain them properly, understanding that good tools are essential to good work.

Precision woodworking machinery

Machinery

Modern machinery supports efficiency and precision in tasks such as dimensioning timber, cutting joinery, and shaping components. We use machinery where it enhances quality and efficiency, while recognizing that hand work remains essential for many tasks.

Machinery is maintained and calibrated regularly, ensuring consistent results. Safety is paramount, with proper guards, dust collection, and operating procedures in place.

The combination of hand tools and machinery allows us to work efficiently while maintaining the quality and character that defines bespoke furniture.

Work Areas

Different areas of the workshop support different stages of work. The bench area is where joinery is cut and components are fitted. Assembly takes place in a dedicated space with adequate room for large pieces.

Finishing is conducted in a separate area designed to minimize dust and contamination. Material storage is organized to protect timber while allowing easy access to boards as needed.

The organization of space supports both efficiency and quality, allowing work to progress smoothly from one stage to the next.

Attention to Detail

Detail work happens at the bench, where components are fitted and surfaces are refined. This is where the precision of joinery becomes apparent, where curves are shaped, and where the final character of the piece is established.

Time spent on details is time well invested. A well-fitted joint, a carefully shaped edge, or a smoothly planed surface contributes to both the appearance and longevity of the furniture.

We take pride in the details, understanding that they distinguish bespoke furniture from mass-produced alternatives.

Tool Selection & Maintenance

Tools are selected based on their suitability for the task at hand. We invest in quality tools, understanding that good tools are essential to good work. Maintenance is regular and thorough, ensuring tools perform as intended.

Hand tools are sharpened frequently, maintaining edges that cut cleanly and efficiently. Machinery is calibrated and maintained according to manufacturer recommendations, with attention to safety and performance.

The relationship between maker and tool is important. Familiarity with tools allows for efficient, confident work, while proper maintenance ensures reliability and longevity.

Material Handling

Timber is handled with care from arrival through to finished piece. Boards are stored properly to prevent warping or checking, with attention to moisture content and environmental conditions.

Material selection happens at the bench, where boards are examined for grain pattern, color, and structural properties. The right board for each component is chosen with consideration of both appearance and function.

Waste is minimized through careful planning and efficient use of material. Offcuts are saved for smaller components or future projects, reflecting our commitment to responsible material use.

Workshop Philosophy

Our workshop is more than a space for making furniture; it's an environment that supports thoughtful, careful work. The tools, organization, and atmosphere all contribute to the quality of the pieces we create.

We believe that the environment in which furniture is made influences the final result. A well-organized, well-equipped workshop allows for focus on the work itself, supporting the attention to detail that defines bespoke furniture.

Visitors to the workshop often comment on the sense of purpose and care evident in the space. This reflects our commitment to the craft and to creating furniture that will serve and delight for generations.
